Red Oak is a medium size 2.5 acre garden and a work in progress that is undergoing further developments as time and money come available.
Red Oak is set amongst well established trees that provide shelter and shade from the harsh sun in our hot North Canterbury summers. Many of the plants have had to survive dry and often windy conditions for months on end.
The gardens surround a Glen Ida Schist homestead built in 2007 on the original site of Sandhurst, with the limestone rock walls built in the early 1900’s retained in the garden.
Whimsical artwork and sculptures also play a part amongst the garden.
There are many places to picnic with limestone outcrops and Weka Pass Railway as your backdrop, and the plant nursery and shop is the last delight not to miss.
The garden has many varied spaces with Deb opting for spontaneous areas as time allows, rather than any kind
of plan or design. You will see Viburnums, hydrangeas, hostas, roses, rhododendrons, day lilies, cannas, succulents, natives, lavenders, vegetable garden and fruit trees.
Directions: From SH7, turn onto Old Weka Pass Loop Road, turn right at Red Oak gateway.
