Town and Country

Hosts: Chrissy & Mark Spalding

Address: 13 Robinson Street, Cheviot

Although in the heart of Cheviot this garden has a rural outlook as it borders a local reserve containing sheep (which we laugh and say “they’re ours”) and exotic trees planted over 100 years ago as part of the Cheviot Hills Station.

When we came here, mid ‘16 there was a remnant of the garden that was planted when the house was built in the early ‘70s. With help from a garden hose to get the right shape and a lot of digging we sculptured out new areas of garden and gave width and shape around the borders.

Some of the mature trees we have pruned and saved but all the under planting and ornamental gardens we have done in the last 7 years. So, it is still a young garden.

We can have incredible frosts here right up to November, maybe a bit of snow even. Then, come summer, drought conditions so it makes gardening interesting especially when there is a water shortage!

I try to have some colour right up to early Autumn when nature takes over for me and it’s a constant surprise and joy for me to have a garden that reflects all 4 seasons as my previous garden had been a sub-tropical one.

Thankfully my garden art that I bought from the last garden has fitted in well and has been added to by some talented local artists. I hope you all get as much pleasure out of this garden as I do.
