Terrace View Garden
24 George Street, Rotherham
An Element of Surprise
Hosts: Tracey & Geoff Topp
Address: 24 George Street, Rotherham
This garden is situated on the edge of the Rotherham township and overlooks rural farm land. No day is ever the same with the beautiful views of the Leslie Hills range, sunsets, and snowy mountains.
The garden was established in 1998 by building into the bank with four terraced levels. We purchased the property in 2008 and we loved how it had already been landscaped with stone walls and steps. The house and garden directly face the north west direction so as you can imagine we have had challenges establishing plants and trees. But you cannot have a view without wind! Through trial and error with clever plantings of hedges and plants suited to the dry in summer, often strong winds and the cold winter climate it has been an interesting few years. We have changed, added, and culled parts of the garden. It is only now we have a strong sense of what plants have a chance here.
Gardening the terraces means that not one area is the same. There are shade and exposed gardens, vegetables and fruit, trees, flowering shrubs, and hedges.
