August 2022
Welcome to our August Newsletter from the Hurunui Garden Festival team.
The winter chill is certainly with us now as the mercury drops and we need to put on a few more layers of clothes. Some parts of the country have had a lot of rain including all our gardens here in the Hurunui but we are looking forward to spring with its official start date being 1st of September. It is then not long till October 27th - 30th being our beautiful Hurunui Garden Festival.
Our up to date guide containing all the properties, events, amenities, maps and other information is on our website hurunuigardenfestival.com and it is time to buy your early bird tickets plus book your tickets to hear New Zealand’s celebrity gardening guru, the wonderful Lynda Hallinan. Tickets are limited to hear Lynda so certainly get in quickly before they all sell out.
A mid winter comment from Meg Macfarlane (Chair of the wonderful committee and committed gardener at Waihui)
Well, the last few weeks have been what our family describe as a “Plinker” – never ending “big ole fat rain,” surface water and mud!! Talk about living in an arctic monsoon! Our Labrador has put on 3 kg in the last month for lack of decent walking days and spends most of his time hibernating waiting for sunny days!
But all is not lost – this tool time chick is now the proud owner of her own Garden Shed!! Yes after years of procrastination (and some fast talking to the local builders) a concrete slab materialised, and an unused pump shed that been sitting out on the farm for 4 years gathering bird poo was finally removed and reinstalled by our merry men on a wet day when all other constructive work ground to a halt.
Proudly now I display my Stihl collection of tools – my newish lawnmower has its own birdproof shelter – and best of all – no non-gardening person has been inside “borrowing” things that never seem to return. How proud I feel as I wander in and turn on the lights (yes even power) recharge my batteries for my tools – and tidily put things away where they are meant to go!
My little patch of citrus (mandarins) is brightening my veranda and actually producing edible fruit – and I wait in anticipation for our winter flowers of Daphne and Wintersweet to scent our house with beautiful aromas
So fellow gardeners – keep warm – make the most of the sun when it appears – get those tools sorted and look forward to more warm days in our beautiful gardens !
