Challenges of a North Canterbury Garden
For some of you rain may not have been your favourite friend. But for a lot of others it was liquid gold when it did finally arrive. From December 2023 to early June we have had minimal rain which has left our poor plants and trees screaming for a drink. I suppose here at Coldstream I am a little bit spoilt as I do have access to water so my garden did become a little Oasis in the district. I have been very lucky to have my “other half” reluctantly help me with numerous jobs. Having the larger machinery to help with the clean-up ,does make gardening less strenuous on the body.
As any garden there is always things to do, so this year we have needed to remove three large conifers that have out grown their site as well as the removal of another large limb, off the grand old willow that majestically arches over the pond. I have noticed spring bulbs poking through the ground, so now it’s time for the pea straw to be placed to help protect them from our harsh frosts that we have here in the Amuri Area.
Here is a list of some of the things you can do now in your garden:
Weed Control:
Winter weeds can be a nuisance. Keep on top of them by regular weeding to prevent them from taking over. Apply mulch to suppress weed growth and retain soil moisture.
Soil Care:
Add organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil structure and fertility. Test your soil’s pH and adjust if necessary. Most plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil.
Tool Maintenance:
Clean, sharpen, and oil your gardening tools to prepare them for the busy spring season ahead.
Vegetable Garden Planting:
Onions and Shallots: Now is a great time to plant onions and shallots. They will be ready for harvesting in summer.
Garlic: If you haven't planted garlic yet, do it now before the soil gets too cold.
Broad Beans and Peas: These can be sown directly into the garden or started in pots.
Happy Gardening and see you all over the Festival Weekend!
