Winter Gardening with Flora Brons
The polar blast has reminded me Winter is very much still here but... the feel of Spring is in the air! The bulbs are showing their heads and the days are getting longer. It’s my favourite time of year to be in the garden. The soil is warming up slowly and that means two things for me; firstly look out for the weeds, they'll sneak back before I know it and secondly, I can start sowing some more hardy biennials! There are many jobs we can be doing at this time of year, so I have written some jobs for the next few months that you can tick off if you haven't already.
Top 3 jobs to do in the garden this August/September:
Finish pruning Roses
Add compost to your soil
Add Mulch or Pea Straw
Sow hardy seeds for Spring/Summer Flowers and Vegetables
Pruning Roses:
For key tips on how to prune your roses, head to our latest video on Instagram to hear Doreen Dryden from Loch Leven Garden and Nursey share her top tips.
Adding compost and the benefits:
If you have the space to make your own then that is the best way to do it, if not, then you can buy it in bags
By adding compost your increasing the organic matter and living organisms and building your top soil.
This is a great way to improve the health of your soil and therefore give your seedlings the best start you can have.
Why add mulch or pea straw, is it really worth it?
It seems like a lot of work at the time but the hours it will save you weeding far outway the job of getting it spread on the garden.
It keeps weeds down which reduces competition for water, space, light and nutrients.
It helps to hold water in the soil for those drier days.
Adds organic matter and protects the soil.
